Right-click on an empty space on the desktop, point to View and then click Show Desktop Icons.

Hide the desktop icons in Windows Vista
On the desktop, if you choose to hide all the icons then you may do so. Once you hide the desktop icons, the desktop items do not get deleted. They remain hidden on the desktop until to choose to show them again.
